Optical mirrors made of dielectric alternating layers are utilized in a variety of application fields. These fields include biomedical applications such as dental mirrors, material processing for directing and guiding laser beams, and they act as efficient reflectors (Bragg mirrors) in light guides and optical resonators. Additionally, they are used in AR/VR/XR sectors as partially reflective components for projection and display applications.

In comparison to metal mirrors, dielectric layer systems can be specifically designed for particular applications. This allows for the realization of selective, narrowband, or broadband behavior with respect to wavelength. Furthermore, dielectric reflectors are sensitive to angles.
